Announcement by the Judicial Service Commission

ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE JUDICIAL SERVICE COMMISSION

 

The Judicial Service Commission announces that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Namibia has appointed the following judges to the Supreme Court and High Court:

 

Supreme Court of Namibia

 

1.            Mr. Justice Maruping Dibotelo

 

Mr. Justice Maruping Dibotelo has been appointed as an Acting Judge of Appeal for the period 1 October 2018 to 31 October 2019.

 

Prior to his appointment as an Acting Judge of Appeal, Justice Dibotelo served as the Chief Justice of Botswana from February 2010 to April 2018. Justice Dibotelo also served as a High Court Judge from September 1996 to January 2010. Justice Dibotelo has been in the judicial system for almost 20 years.

 

2.            Lady Justice Baaitse (Bess) Elizabeth Nkabinde

 

Lady Justice Nkabinde has beenappointed as an Acting Judge of Appeal for the period 1 October 2018 to 31 October 2019.

 

Prior to her appointment as an Acting Judge of Appeal, Justice Nkabinde served as a Justice of the South African Constitutional Court from January 2006 to December 2017. Before that, she served an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal from June to November 2005. Justice Nkabinde has been in the judicial system for almost 20 years.

 

The two judges are appointed for a year to enable them to form a pool from which they may be called upon to serve whenever a need arises.

 

High Court of Namibia

 

1.            Mrs. Johanna Taatsu Salionga

 

Mrs. Salionga has been appointed as a permanent Judge of the High Court with effect from 1 November 2018.

 

Prior to her permanent appointment, Mrs. Salionga served as an Acting Judge of the High Court from 1 November 2017 to 30 March 2018. The appointed was extended from 1 April 2018 to 30 June 2018, and was further extended from 1 July 2018 to 31 August 2018.

 

Mrs.  Salionga is a Namibian citizen and is currently serving as the Chief Magistrate in charge of the Magistrates Courts in the country. She is a career magistrate whose involvement in the law spans over 14 years.

 

2.            Mr. Ileni Tungweni Velikoshi

               

Mr. Ileni Velikoshi has been appointed as an Acting Judge of the High Court for the period 1 November 2018 to 15 December 2018 to preside over a specific criminal case.

 

Mr. Velikoshi is currently a Regional Court Magistrate stationed at Magistrates Court Mungunda Street, Windhoek. Mr. Velikoshi has 8 years’ experience as a magistrate. Prior to his engagement as a Regional Court Magistrate, he served as a Principal Magistrate from December 2014 to October 2015. Before that, he was a Senior Magistrate from April 2010 to December 2014.
